Path of Exile Item Upgrading
The ability to upgrade items allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes that boost the base stats of the item or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory, and also access the kiln.
Typically objects with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base while items with strong bases such as eth titans aren't affected much in their stats after being upgraded.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components are items that can be incorporated into weapons, armor, trinkets and gathering tools, giving an attribute bonus or additional impact when the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, retrieved as loot by enemies, or obtained from missions and chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a specific level to upgrade.
In order to upgrade the quality of a weapon or piece armor, the user must choose it and click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will show a preview on the right side of the screen showing what the expected upgrade statistics will be as well as the material or component needed to complete the upgrade.
There are three kinds of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which include gems, can be placed in any type of equipment, and offer lower bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type.
